Congratulations Sr Anna de la Croix!

The photographs below show Anna Larkin of our Parish at her "Clothing" as Sr Anna de La Croix at the Mother House of the Little Sisters of the Poor, La Tour St Joseph, France.

The Little Sisters were founded in the 19th century by Saint Jeanne Jugan near Rennes, France. Jugan felt the need to care for the many impoverished elderly who lined the streets of French towns and cities. Today the Little Sisters of the Poor serve in 32 countries around the world and continue in their original purpose of caring for the elderly.

We wish Anna all the best in her chosen vocation.

lineRainbows steal the show at the Parish Feast!

On a sunny afternoon a good number attended the family feast and enjoyed music and song with the rainbow guides giving us a star performance of some favourite songs. We were also entertained by many of the youth of the parish, in both instrumental and vocal performances - all very enjoyable and professional. We were also treated to some poetry in a humorous recital by Wendy! Finally we were played out by our own Fr Pat jazz combo with Colin tinkling the ivories. Thanks to our compere Richard Cavadino for supporting and organising our talented performers and everyone else who helped to make it such an enjoyable day.

Wike Cub Camp

The Cubs together with a few of the scouts had a lively time in the sunshine at the Wike camp this year. They are seen above wearing their own made soccer strips, representing different countries. England won the world cup in the football tournament...is this an omen?

lineTalk by Julian Filochowski CSG OBE on the life of Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador CA (19th May)

julian's talk

Julian declared that Romero had been a profound influence on his own commitment as a Catholic and gave a passionate and fascinating account of the unjust situation in El Salvador which Romero sought to redress, paying the ultimate price. His martyrdom was 30 years ago this year.
The official process of his canonisation by the Church is underway but the people of Latin America, especially Salvadorians, already regard him as a Saint, as do many others around the world, notably those engaged in work for justice and peace.
As Julian talked, Romero's spirit seemed very present in the gathering in Holy Name parish hall and it was a shame that the numbers of people who came were not greater.

The photos show:
1. A section of the audience at the talk.
2. Julian holding aloft a reliquary containing a piece of the bloodstained alb worn by Romero for the Mass at which he was assassinated.

Julian Filochowski CMG OBE

JF

Julian Filochowski was born in Normanton, Yorkshire, in 1947. He studied Economics as an IBM scholar at Churchill College, Cambridge. On graduation he served as Economic Planning Officer in the Ministry of Finance in Belize City, before taking up the post of Coordinator of the British Volunteer Programme in Central America.
In 1973 Julian joined the staff of CIIR in London as Education Secretary. For nine years he campaigned on human rights and development issues linked to Latin America. He was particularly close to Dom Helder Camara in Brazil and Oscar Romero, the martyred Archbishop of San Salvador, both of whom on Julian’s initiative were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by British MPs. He led and accompanied solidarity missions and human rights delegations to Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Nicaragua, and Peru and with British Parliamentarians managed to gain entry to the torture cells in the National Guard headquarters in El Salvador.
In 1982 Julian was appointed Director of CAFOD, the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development.  During his stewardship CAFOD was transformed to become a major international relief and development agency with a high national profile and recognised competence and professionalism in humanitarian disaster response, long term development programmes, advocacy and lobbying and grass roots development education.
Under Julian’s leadership, CAFOD pioneered the UK NGO response to the global HIV/AIDS pandemic and, not without heavy opposition, secured a commitment to prioritise HIV/AIDS within Caritas Internationalis - the global church network which spans over 200 nations.  This led to education, training, awareness raising, prevention and care programmes across five continents under the auspices of an international commission on HIV/AIDS which Julian chaired for fifteen years.
Julian pioneered interfaith collaboration between CAFOD and the Muslim community in Britain, visibly working in partnership with Islamic Relief in Afghanistan, Chechnya, Bosnia and Kosovo. He was instrumental in the setting up of many specialised trusts and NGOs, inter alia co-founder of the Latin America Bureau, founder-Trustee of Caritas Social Action and Chair of the Archbishop Romero Trust.
He brought CAFOD to be a founding member of the Jubilee 2000 coalition in pursuit of millennium debt cancellation.
Julian was awarded successively an OBE and a CMG for services to international development. After 21 years at the helm he stepped down as CAFOD’s CEO and took up sabbatical Visiting Fellowships at Cambridge to study the life and teaching of the man who had most profoundly affected his life and faith commitment, Archbishop Romero. In 2004 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in Human Rights by the Jesuit University in San Salvador.  He is a director of the Tablet Publishing Company and he is currently working as an international development consultant on assignment in Ethiopia with ActionAid.
