Mgr McGuire was born in Selby, the eldest of 7 children. He was educated at
St Michael’s College in Leeds before going to Ushaw College, Durham.
He began his formation for the priesthood there before being transferred to
the English College in Rome. He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Leeds
by Cardinal Traglia in the Chapel of the Pio Latino College in Rome on 28th
October 1956. His fellow ordinand that day was a little known Cormac Murphy
O’Connor, later to be rector of the English College, Bishop of Arundel
and Brighton, Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, but failing in the singular
privilege of being Parish Priest of the Holy Name!
His first appointment was to St Marie’s in Sheffield before moving up
to St Theresa’s, Crossgates and then on to St Anne’s Cathedral.
From there he went as Chaplain to Bradford University before being made Vocations
Director and being assigned as Director of Adult Catechesis which is now known
as the RE Team. He was parish priest of St Brigid’s, Churwell before
being made Administrator of the Cathedral in 1981. In this year he also became
Bishop Wheeler’s Vicar General. He also served as Vicar General to Bishop
Konstant. One of his curates at the cathedral was a certain Fr. Arthur Roche,
now 9th Bishop of Leeds. In 2003 he left the Cathedral after 23 years as Administrator
and Dean and after a short sabbatical he arrived in the November as successor
to Fr. Barrie Cummins.
In 1975 Pope Paul VI created him Chaplain on Honour. In 1981 he was created
Prelate of Honour by Pope John Paul II and in 2003, at the request of Bishops
Konstant and Roche, Pope John Paul gave him the title Protonotary Apostolic,
the highest honour a priest can receive from the Holy Father.

Fr. Simon was born in Batley, the eldest of two children. He was educated
at St Mary’s school in Batley and then at St John Fisher’s High
School in Dewsbury. One of his vivid memories of his time at St Mary’s
was a visit from one of Bishop Wheeler’s new Monsignori to talk about
the sacrament of Confirmation: non other than his current parish priest! After
A levels he went to Ushaw College to try his vocation but before the end of
his first year decided it wasn’t for him and left to go to work.
He worked firstly for the Leeds & Holbeck Building Society in the city
before going to work at the accounts centre for the Burton Group in Harehills.
After some years, still feeling unsettled as to his vocation, he returned
to Ushaw and continued his studies for the priesthood. During his time at
Ushaw he gained his BA degree in Pastoral Theology from Durham University.
He was ordained a deacon in St Cuthbert’ chapel in 1999 and, after serving
in St Robert’s and St Joseph’s parishes in Harrogate, he was ordained
priest in the Cathedral on 1st July 2000 by Bishop Konstant.
Fr. Simon’s first appointment was to Fr. John Nunan, a former curate
of the Holy Name, at St Austin’s Wakefield. Whilst there he was also
chaplain to Pinderfields Hospital. It was also whilst in this parish that
he took his first group of young people to World Youth Day in Toronto in 2002.
Upon returning from Toronto, he was appointed as curate to Fr. Cummins at
the Holy Name. However, after only 6 months he was asked by Bishop Konstant
to go as Priest in Charge to Our Lady of Lourdes in Cardigan Road, Headingley.
He was there for 6 months before moving back to Holy Name.
